How it works at home

Motorised Blinds & Shutters in everyday life

Curtains get opened and closed several times a day, and it is one of the jobs people forget most. Motorised blinds and shutters hand that job over to the clock, the position of the sun and the weather outside. In living rooms with big windows, double-height villas and seafront flats, this is one of the upgrades people notice most.

Curtain, roller and venetian blind motors

01/05

What can be motorised?

  • Curtains and sheers: traditional curtains on a motorised track that open sideways.
  • Roller and day-night blinds: blinds driven up and down by a tubular motor.
  • Venetian blinds: models that both raise and lower and tilt their slats.
  • External shutters: used outside the window for sun, noise and security.
  • Awnings and pergolas: outdoor shading for balconies, terraces and gardens.

Scenarios with motorised blinds

A gentle start

The bedroom roller blind opens halfway a few minutes before your alarm. Daylight fills the room gradually, so you don't need to switch on a light when you wake up.

Midday sun

Rooms facing south or west can overheat on summer afternoons. A sun sensor or a time-based rule lowers the blinds partway during those hours. The air conditioning has less work to do, and furniture and floors are kept out of direct sun.

Wind and rain

Awnings and pergolas can be damaged in strong wind. A wind sensor retracts them automatically once a threshold is reached. Weather on the Black Sea coast can turn quickly, so we recommend this sensor for any external shading.

Movie and bedtime

Select "Movie" and the living room curtains close while the lights dim. "Good night" lowers every shutter. All it takes is having the blinds on the same system as your smart lighting.

New builds versus existing homes

During construction or renovation

Most blind motors are mains powered and need a supply point at each window. Leaving cables at the window heads or in the curtain pocket of a suspended ceiling at first fix avoids visible cables or trunking later. If you are planning a recessed curtain pocket, its dimensions should match the motor type.

In a home you already live in

Where there is no socket or supply near the window, battery or rechargeable motors are an option. They communicate wirelessly and can be fitted to an existing track or roller mechanism. Depending on use, they need charging every so often, and some models come with a small solar panel.

Things to consider before installation

  • Weight and width: the motor is sized to the weight of the curtain and the length of the track. An underpowered motor on a heavy curtain will wear out sooner.
  • Manual use: some track motors sense a gentle tug on the curtain and finish opening or closing it. That makes life easier for guests and children.
  • Noise: in bedrooms, how loud the motor runs matters, and we factor that into product choice.
  • External shutters and safety: look for obstacle detection and frost protection on external shutters.
  • Fabric and motor together: having the curtain maker and the automation installer work from the same measurements avoids surprises on installation day.

Linking blinds with the rest of the house

Blinds can run on a simple timer, but the real benefit comes when they work with other systems. Lowering blinds against the summer sun helps the air conditioning run less, and we can tie that into your smart climate control scenes. Shutters closing when you leave can also be part of your security routine.

To look at your windows and curtain options, book a site survey. We take measurements with you and talk through motor and control options on site.

How we work

From first visit to handover in four steps

Smart home projects go wrong when decisions get made on the day of installation. So we split the job into clear stages from the start.

  1. 01

    Site survey

We visit the home or the building site and look at the wiring, windows and heating system. We also ask how you actually live in the space.

  2. 02

    Design

We put together a written plan: what gets controlled in each room, wired or wireless, and which scenes you want. You review it with us before any work starts.

  3. 03

    Installation & programming

We fit the devices, program the system and test every scene on site. On renovation jobs we work to the same schedule as your electrician and other trades.

  4. 04

    Training & support

At handover we walk through the app, the wall panels and the scenes together. If you want to change a scene or add a device later, just get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Motorised Blinds & Shutters questions

Question not listed? Write to us

Usually, yes. The track or roller mechanism needs to suit a motor, and sometimes replacing the track is the better option. We assess this on site.

Battery or rechargeable motors can be used. They need charging from time to time, and some models run off a small solar panel.

Mains motors stay where they are until the power comes back. Many curtain track motors can be pulled by hand; for external shutters we discuss emergency options during the survey.
